Is vaseline safe on rubber O-rings?

I'm using vaseline as a lubricant for a pump, and a friend of mine told me that the Vaseline will dry out the o-ring and make it crack. Is this true? If so, are there any ways to prevent that from happening? Also, I do not have silicon grease, so that is not an option.
