Why did the refs give the ball to the Celtics in the 4th when Garnett batted it out of bounds?

Did David Stern want to make this series more interesting and attract more viewers? Knowing if the Lakers go 2 up on the Celtics it would be all over? Since Phil Jackson is 47-0 or something after winning game 1?
