What is the incentive of the prosecutor to get a severe sentence for a criminal?

When accused criminals are tried in court, the prosecutor always wants to seek the maximum sentence possible, while the defense attorney tries to get as light a sentence as possible. If the judge hands down a severe sentence, does the prosecutor make more money? If not, what is their motivation for getting a stiff sentence? Do they get more money if they get a conviction rather than an acquittal?
